IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe digital edition - July/August 2009 - (Page 45) Migration Tasks and Planning Tools A migration task is one that must be performed to replace an older version or release of a software product with a newer one. IBM identifies z/OS V1.9 migration tasks in “z/OS V1.9 Migration,” with versions that cover either z/OS V1.7 to V1.9, or z/OS V1.8 to V1.9. Someone familiar with the target system’s intricacies should review this manual, and all relevant migration tasks should be compiled. In addition, there are usually migration tasks unique to an organization; these tasks should also be added to the list. A Migration Starter Kit provides a migration-plan template to which you can add your own migration-related task s. I BM Redbook s* publications, ISV manuals, SH A R E presentations and IBM whitepapers provide many technical resources. The z/OS Migration Checker is new with z/OS V1.8, and is a no-fee product t hat ca n be dow n loaded on l i ne. It checks for several necessary migration actions on your existing system, and produces a report on migration actions that’ll be needed. Approximately 30 checker functions are included in the z/OS V1.9 version. The Migration Plan Once you’ve done you r homework , creating a z/OS V1.9 migration plan is a fairly straightforward process. Assign individuals to tasks, sequence the tasks, assign a time to each task (this isn’t easy but may be necessary if you have a deadline) and put it in a planning tool. Then, go to work.
