IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe digital edition - July/August 2009 - (Page 42) Technical Corner An in-depth look at programming, systems operations and more Planning for a z/OS V1.9 Migration BY JIM SCHESVOLD igration to a new z/OS* release can be accompl i she d mor e e f f ic ie nt l y a nd effectively when thorough research and careful preparation is used to create a migration plan, and if the plan is used as a tracking and monitoring tool. Project-analysis tools can be a valuable aid in building this plan. This article investigates what goes into making an efficacious z/OS migration plan, in particular a z/OS V1.7 to z/OS V1.9 migration. Migrating to z/OS V1.9 is important because you’ll be in a better position to migrate to z/OS V1.11, now being previewed. IBM supports a span of three releases for coexistence, fallback and migration (covered in more detail below). Many migration components make up a migration plan. At a minimum, you should: s %DUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT THE MIGRATION PROCESS s #ONDUCT A THIRDPARTY PRODUCT SURVEY s 0LAN AND PREPARE THE ORDER FOR BOTH Z/3 AND supporting products. s $ETERMINE AN INSTALLATION METHOD s )DENTIFY Z/3 RELEASES INVOLVED IN THE MIGRATION s #ONSIDER THE IMPACT OF A MIGRATIONS TO YOUR maintenance schedule, system performance and existing hardware. s !NALYZE THE IMPACT OF WITHDRAWN Z/3 ELEMENTS or features. s )DENTIFY RELEVANT MIGRATION TASKS AND TOOLS s $EVELOP A MIGRATION PLAN This sequence varies based on organizational structure, system environment and business priorities, and there’s usually a substantial overlap in activities. M If off-site education isn’t in your budget, then the z/OS V1.9 Migration Teleconference is a good place TO START #ONSIDER TWO MANUALS A MUST FOR LEARNING and planning a z/OS migration: “z/OS V1.9 Planning for Installation” (http://publibz.boulder.ibm. For a comprehensive list of z/OS V1.9 migration references, see the online companion article, “Jim’s Top 100 z / OS V1. 9 Re f e r e nc e s” ( h t t p : / / t i n y u r l .c om / z-OSv19references). Third-Party Product Survey A review of third-party vendors or ISVs for a z/OS V1.9 migration might seem odd, but maintenance or release upgrades are often needed for a new release. This is true for performance or debugging products because they often access z/OS control blocks or similar information. Third-party product upgrades of ten compr ise a substantial por tion of a z/OS m igrat ion. Somet i mes get t i ng requ i red maintenance or a new release can be time-consuming. I recommend calling your vendors early, and checking with them from time to time during an upgrade. Prepare and Plan the Order A n inventor y of unpr iced and pr iced optiona l z/OS V1.9 features your company uses should be made prior to placing the order. Unpriced features that aren’t ordered won’t be shipped with the product. Priced features will be shipped, but they won’t be enabled.
