This two-level caching mechanism provides good response times for frequently used and highly aggregated data, while still providing access to rarely used and detailed data. Any SQL coming into the data warehouse can leverage these MQTs, perhaps providing a performance boost to traditional reporting as well. Design Studio models the OLAP cube as an extension of the physical data model. An OLAP model defines how cube structures of dimension, hierarchies and measures map to the relational tables. Create a cube model from scratch or use a quick-start wizard. The quick-start wizard examines the underlying relational database model and determines the measures and dimensions to provide a starting point. You can add measurers or dimension attributes and define the hierarchies before it’s deployed to a cube server. The Administration Console is used to define a cube server, assign cubes to a cube server and manage the cube server. A cube server can have many cubes and a cube can be assigned to multiple cube servers. When the cube is started, the dimension members are loaded into the member cache and, if a seed query is defined, the data cache will be pre-populated. Microsoft* Excel is the most widely used BI tool today. Cubing Services provide an ODBO plugin to Excel, which allows dynamic access to Cubing Services cubes from Excel pivot tables. Full-featured BI tools such as Cognos provide support for Cubing Services. provides a basic, yet complete, toolkit for building your warehouse.
