IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe digital edition - July/August 2009 - (Page 32) in some combination. There are often arguments over how much of the data-access layer should be exposed. Exposing the data-access layer can help provide more control and the capability to tune, while less exposure is perceived as being easier to create/manage. As data becomes more related across enterprises, a mixed solution has become more desirable. Having tools to help manage data access in an integrated fashion has become important. An IT department should be able to leverage frameworks to provide standards and performance mechanisms, but at the same time develop code that enables additional business logic and integration across applications. In short, development is very much a science today, but many choices must be made when defining application, system and enterprise architectures. Those choices require the right tools to help integrate teams, processes and technologies. 9Zeadnis whenyou install, configure, change and promote applications, services and databases into production. Needless to say, there’s much coordination and automation required for a successful deployment. As I mentioned earlier, few stand-alone applications exist. We have systems and systems of systems. When deploying database environments, that all needs to be taken into consideration and managed. Additionally, in today’s landscape, the scrutiny around governance starts to play. You must be able to answer the following questions: What changes were made? Why were those changes made? Who approved those changes? How did they affect the system? If you’re in a regulated industry or even just a public company, these questions are a standard audit practice, so having a way to automate and track this information is critical. DeZgViZis when you administer databases to meet both internal and external service level agreements (SLAs) and security requirements while providing responsive service to end users. Dei^b^oZ is when you’ll need to st udy systems and workloads through trend analysis, capacit y and growth planning, and application-retirement plans. Once there’s an understanding across these areas, plans for improvement can be put into place and executed. The combination of operate and optimize is where you manage the ongoing system–including applications and databases while they’re in production. Some activities include performance tuning, data archiving, problem discovery and resolution. <dkZgcmay be last in this list, but it certainly isn’t the last thing you’ll do. Govern sits in the center of the lifecycle because 32 J U LY/A UGUS T 20 09 governance is truly part of every piece of the lifecycle. In the past, system administrators often thought of governance as Big Brother watching every move you make to be sure you’re following all of the policies. Yes, following policies is important, but governance is much more and it can be critical to a system’s success as well as an organization’s well being. It doesn’t really matter whether you’re a government agency or a public or privately held company. There are government, industry and organization rules that must be followed when it comes to applications, which are also a part of this puzzle. The second piece is using a governance model to improve your way of working. Governance gives you the oversight to fulfill regulatory requirements and pass those pesky audits, but it can be so much more if you look at governance as a way of sharing common information and ensuring teams are working together to achieve common goals. When you think about governance in terms of integrated data management, think of shared models, policies and metadata—which will speed team collaboration, ensure commonality across systems and give you the information required to pass those audits. Governance is often thought of as an enemy—that darn oversight that slows you down and gets in the way—but that really isn’t true. System administrators must start thinking of governance in a different light. Governance is what helps ensure systems are built smartly, considering the different facets across the organization, and ensure policies and requirements are consistently applied and reused.
