IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe digital edition - July/August 2009 - (Page 29) An integrated data-management approach supports data throughout its lifecycle BY ERIC NAIBURG rganizations are much li ke living and breathing organisms. They must be fed for survival; of course, they eat money and not food. They have organs that make the organization run, but instead of hearts and lungs they have people; organizations must continuously learn and understand the environment around them, which requires data capturing, processing and interpretation, much like a brain captures and interprets information from the outside world. As the data amounts companies capture increase, it’s becoming more difficult for organizations to figure out how to manage it. Laws and regulations that add retention and privacy requirements exacerbate the problem. Meanwhile, there’s the ever-present requirement to keep business applications running at top performance, even as groups within your organization request you capture and use more of the available data–all of which means you must improve your capability to manage data in an integrated way. ´ Integrated Data-Management Requirements It’s difficult to find an application that stands on its own today; what once stood alone has become more integrated into other applications, in essence creating systems and even systems of systems. Data expands beyond an organization; which is often required to share data across the business, with customers, partners and others. The requirement to share information is complicated since organizations are rarely deployed on a single platform and the chance of an outside organization being on the same platform is even less likely. As an example, more organizations are combining packaged applications like ERP and customer r e lat ion sh ip ma nagement ( C R M ) produc t s w it h t hei r already built and new in-house developed applications. ILLUSTRA TION B Y TO M WH IT E T he applications may reside on different OSs, use different database management systems (DBMS) and versions and be written in different languages–yet you need a way to br ing t he data together and manage it across the enterprise. Figure 1 (page 30) shows a small system-architecture example from a single per spective. Wit h in our organizat ions, t he enter pr ise architecture is composed of hundreds or even thousands of these perspective diagrams. Integrated data management is the capability to manage enter pr ise-applicat ion data and opt im ize data-d r iven applications, from requirements to retirement, across these heterogeneous environments. In short, it provides the capability to manage systems that require integration across different environments that span technologies, combine custom and packaged applications that may vary significantly in age, and are managed by a team of individuals who may not even be in the same building, let alone time zone. What do organizations require to deal with such complexities? They implement an integrated toolset to span today’s complex environments that also satisfies the many roles within an organization. IBM helps companies address these data-management issues with its Optim solutions for integrated data management, which manage data from requirement to retirement. These solutions also boost performance, empower team collaboration and improve governance across applications, databases and platforms. In this article, I’ll outline how the Optim solutions can help you meet your ever-increasing needs, throughout the data lifecycle. ´ Integrated Data Management in Action 20 09 The lifecycle for managing data from requirements to retirement can be expressed in many ways. The data lifecycle stages include: design, develop, deploy, operate and optimize, and govern. ibms ystemsmag .com /mainframe 29 J U LY/A UGUS T http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/mainframe Table of Contents for the Digital Edition of IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe digital edition -
