“There’s a brand-new suite of reporting and monitoring tools built in to TSM 6,” says Vining. “For customers who wou ld ot her w ise pu rcha se t h i rd-pa r t y repor t i ng a nd monitor ing solutions before, t h is is a big dea l. We’ve prov ided dozens of repor t s t hat ca n be mod if ied a nd customized as the customer needs, and the near-real-time monitoring allows them to monitor and see what’s going on almost on a real-time basis. This provides huge savings for customers who won’t have to go out and buy all sorts of extra tools, but this also offers huge savings when it comes to administrative time.” Enhanced VMware Support TSM 6 features enhanced VMware support over the VMware consolidated backup enhancements made available in earlier releases. Most notably, TSM 6 allows customers to perform a full image backup of their virtual machines, which should “Data de-duplication is a huge buzzword in the technology marketplace right now,” says Vining. “The big problem is, customers are dealing with almost out-of-control datastorage needs and they’re trying to get control of it through many data-reduction techniques. De-duplication is one such available technology that works best in backup or archive environments where there’s lots of duplicate data. Duplicate data can build up in cases where a company performs a full backup to disk once ever y week or so. When it comes to frequent backups, anywhere up to 70 percent or more of that data is an unchanged duplicate of the previous backup. Data de-duplication reduces all that unnecessary redundancy.” In the TSM environment, data duplication isn’t much of an issue, since a full backup is performed once at the very beginning, and all subsequent backups are incremental, mean ing t hey on ly back up t hat data t hat’s changed. Essent ia l ly, T SM comes equ ipped w it h it s ow n data- “TSM 6 as a whole should be able to help clients reduce operational and capital costs, improve service levels and mitigate risks to their businesses.” —Richard Vining provide improved business continuity and disaster recovery. In the cost-cutting arena, a new Tivoli software-wide sub-capacity pricing model permits customers to split the available processor cores among multiple virtual machines, without purchasing additional TSM client licenses. “With TSM 6, the capability to back up full images allows customers to back up fast without using a lot of the VMware system resources,” says Vining. “You can perform image backups without using a proxy server, so it’s a little bit easier and cleaner. It’s also good for being able to pick up a virtual machine and move it to another physical location. You can do a lot more things with virtual machines this way.” reduction functionality included. TSM 6 Extended Edition, however, extends that with data de-duplication for the disk pools that sit behind TSM. Built-In Data De-Duplication Data de-duplication for disk storage pools is included in the TSM 6 Extended Edition at no extra cost. This capability can improve recovery times and/or reduce the capacity required to store backup data. References Tivoli Storage manager: www.ibm.com/software/tivoli/products/storage-mgr/ TSM 6 for Mail Although there’s more functionality and capabilities with TSM 6, of special note is the item-level recovery possible for Microsoft* Exchange. TSM for Mail basically allows the restoration of individual messages, notes, tasks, calendar entries, contacts, etc.; it’s not necessary to restore an entire server or mail box to get at one or two deleted items. Rather, you can now drill down and pick and choose what you want to restore using a simple drag-and-drop operation. TSM for Mail is sort of the icing to a very large and rich TSM 6 cake. “This is one thing we’ve gotten a lot of good feedback about,” says Vining. “It’s really a useful feature customers should enjoy. More generally, however, TSM 6 as a whole should be able to help clients reduce operational and capital costs, improve service levels and mitigate risks to their businesses.” R yan Rhodes i s a for me r editor for I BM Sy s te m s M a ga z i ne .
