IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe digital edition - July/August 2009 - (Page 20) Focus on Storage “Generally, going from TSM 5 to TSM 6, customers should see a 40- to 50percent improvement or more in backup and storage performance.” —Richard Vining, product marketing manager, Tivoli Storage Manager Vining, product marketing manager for Tivoli Storage Manager within IBM Software Group. “However, there are workarounds. Rather than have the TSM server sit on the z/OS platform—as has been available in the past—the server can be hosted on a distributed platform r unning A IX*, Linux* or even Windows*, and there’s a TSM 6 client that can run on z/OS, so you can still back up your mainframe data. A lso, t he TSM 6 Ser ver can r un on a [Linu x on System z] partition. In this latest release of TSM 6, the big improvement is we replaced the old database that was managing the whole thing and plugged in DB2, which really enhances scalability, performance and reliability. It’s a huge, huge improvement to the product, and it’s an improvement I think mainframe customers can hugely benefit from.” At its core, TSM 6 is still the innovative data-protection and management powerhouse it’s always been, allowing organizations to secure, store and assure availability of their digital data assets. TSM remains a comprehensive, enterprise-wide data-protection and recovery solution, only now it comes equipped with many improvements customers can leverage to address their own data-protection and management needs. Bringing DB2 on Board Perhaps the most notable enhancement to TSM 6 is the integrated DB2 database technolog y. By remov ing t he previous database-management tool and replacing it with IBM DB2, TSM 6 delivers unsurpassed security, scalability and performance, as well as providing the peace of mind knowing DB2 has a foundation of more than a quar ter century of innovation and development behind it. What’s more, the tightly integrated DB2 operates seamlessly within TSM, so no DB2 administrative skills are required. “The big thing really is the scalability,” says Vining. “We can now manage up to 1 billion objects—which can include files, entire databases, an image of an entire system and more—on a single TSM server. And that’s not a hard limit; that’s just what the engineers were willing to test and support at this point. The old database solution could only manage half of that number, and that was a hard limit. With DB2, we’re practically unlimited when it comes to built-in, upside scalability. It can be an enormous amount of data that’s being protected by a single TSM server. There’s also a nine-fold increase in recovery log size, which allows for a similar increase in the number of concurrent operations, protected client systems, backup job sizes and more.” The introduction of DB2, with its improved scalability, also offers simplified TSM deployment; customers can manage more data using fewer TSM 6 servers (as much as a twoto-one reduction, in some cases). The TSM single backupserver model is uncomplicated, and TSM 6 Admin Center installation requires half of the time and disk memor y previous releases required. The TSM UI leverages autonomic computing technologies, such as a self-tuning database buffer pool. UI innovations provide simplified database administration and management. Improved automatic runtime validity checks verify backup data on the fly—quickly identifying and correcting errors—which also simplifies management. System availability is improved via new online database-reorganization capabilities that enable database changes, tuning and repairs to be performed while the system continues operating. Taken as a whole, the addition of DB2 and the simplified deployment, database administration and management, and improved system availability translates into highly improved overall TSM performance and availability. “Mileage may vary, depending on differences in particular I T set ups, but generally, going f rom TSM 5 to TSM 6, customers should see a 40- to 50-percent improvement or more in backup and storage performance,” says Vining. “This really is a huge improvement over the previous version, and it’s because DB2 brings so much to the table when it comes to simplifying administration and automating tasks.” Reporting and Monitoring Makeover TSM 6 is now equipped with many preconfigured, fully customizable reports as well as near real-time monitoring made possible through a customizable GUI. The new reporting and monitoring features are included with TSM 6 with no additional licensing costs. The tools improve and enhance the administration of multiple TSM servers in large environments, while causing less impact to the managed servers. 20 JUL Y/A U G U S T 2 0 0 9 ibms ystemsmag .com /mai nframe http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/mainframe Table of Contents for the Digital Edition of IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe digital edition -
