(See Figure 1, right). 9ViVXdaaZXi^dc—the basic input data required for this type of project falls into the following three categories: and organizational environment, etc. The answers provide a deeper understanding of the current technological state and help formulate better conclusions about the environment and, therefore, more effective recommendations. 9ViVVcVanh^h—the Scorpion consulting team then analyzes the collected data and information from two perspectives in s )NFRASTRUCTURE BUDGET AND COSTS 4HE STUDY TEAM PROVIDES Figure 1 The Scorpion Study Methodology data-collection templates and guidance to IT financial staff members who collect annual infrastructure cost data for each major technology platform and by cost category. Actual budget data is used wherever possible. This cost data helps calculate current service delivery cost for each technology platform. Further, this data forms the foundation for the cost-benefit business cases that will be offered in support of each recommendation. Since the study team concentrates only on costs that are variable and directly proportional to the number of in-scope ser vers, these costs are often ver y different from those the company currently uses for its ongoing IT management, charge backs and control functions. One of the major Figure 2 Sample Server Data value-add elements of this method is a financial model based on hard-dollar, recurring and manageable costs that a client can validate and use. This approach provides invaluable insights into often hidden or “gray area” costs that should be fairly apportioned to the specific platforms. s 3ERVER DATA 4HE )4 SERVER LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS BEGINS WITH utilizing a detailed spreadsheet that serves as the primary data repository and forms the foundation of the model and engagement workbook (see Figure 2, right). Sample serverutilization data is also collected. The most useful is a plot of server processor, memory and I/O utilization, taken every 10 to 15 minutes over a 24-hour period. The client may need to collect or aggregate this ser ver data from several sources and as such, it can Figure 3 Sample of Financial Analysis typically be the most time-consuming task in the entire study engagement. s /PERATIONAL DATA 4HIS DATA AND infor mat ion pr i ma r i ly comes f rom inter views with key executives, line management and key support and operations staff. During a two- to three-day series of on-site interviews, the study team will attempt to gather as much useful information and insight into, for example, managements’ strategic goals and primary long- and short-term objectives, the important issues confronting the organization, the infrastructure’s strengths and weaknesses, the political 12 J U LY/A UGUS T 20 09 ibms ystemsmag .com/mai nframe http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/mainframe Table of Contents for the Digital Edition of IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe digital edition -
