They look for things that are more secure because there’s a lot of focus on privacy and security in our society today. As they have problems in their existing infrastructure, they’re looking for more integrated, consolidated, highly virtualized, efficient platforms.” For these and other reasons, many companies are returning to their roots, realizing distributed computing may not be the best solution if they’re going to embrace the inevitable integration of multiple data sources that defines the smarter planet. In fact, they’re beginning to realize other forms of tailor solutions to meet those industries’ needs and understand what their business drivers are. That allows us to walk into discussions with clients knowing what their institutional goals are and then align those with industry trends, as well as bring in common platforms that run across industries,” Freund says. No Small Part In the distributed-computing world, the cost of maintaining many servers, applications, databases and storage devices to attain tr ue business value can be ver y high. This is “The smarter planet is all about enabling information, people and processes to react more organically and with more intelligence.” —Karl Freund, vice president of Strategy and Marketing, System z computing may be the best way to cut costs, risks and threats, while also improving service-level expectations, especially with emerging technologies that have made it easier, safer and more cost-effective to do so. As Freund explains, “The smar ter planet is all about enabling information, people and processes to react more organically and with more intelligence. The way you do that is, first of all, instrumenting activities and processes so they can be better measured and understood. Second, you have to make sure all of that collective intelligence of the elements of this value chain are interconnected so they communicate and share information.” I BM has developed a dynamic i nf rast r uc t u re f ra mework t hat emphasi zes seven key points, including virtualization, energy efficiency, service management, asset management, security, business resiliency and information infrastructure. The IBM System z platform is well positioned to address these points, helping customers reduce hard costs related to servers and software as well as expenses related to systems management. The platform can also help users manage risks, so businesses don’t lose data, and improve overall service levels for both internal end users and external customers and business partners. A s pa r t of t h i s , I BM i s of fer i ng M ig r at ion Fac tor y assessments that look at companies’ current IT infrastructures and how they can make changes to save money, improve risk management and expand services. “We have fairly deep expertise in quite a number of industries that allows us to 42 M AY/J U N E 2 0 0 9 ibms ystemsmag .com/mai nframe particularly apparent in situations where individual boxes are each dedicated to only one task, and that’s a simple example. Many larger companies have hundreds—if not thousands—of such servers deployed in single-job configurations, and each one of them has to be managed and administered. To add r e s s s uc h se r ve r s pr awl ( a nd t he a s soc iate d maintenance costs) and embrace the dynamic infrastructure, the System z platform has advanced virtualization capabilities. Instead of running single servers for single jobs, companies can now devote far fewer servers to many more jobs—at much lower hardware, systems management and energy use costs. “We had a client with hundreds of distributed servers, the operating costs of which were very high. Then somebody within that organization had the bright idea of using an existing mainframe, and they moved some of their workloads onto the System z platform. Notably, they had stopped growing their mainframe and were considering migrating off, but decided to upgrade their System z mainf rame because they could significantly reduce many of their costs, including those associated with management and energy consumption,” Freund says. “That’s just part of what the dynamic infrastructure can offer.” And that’s no small part. According to the study, “IBM System z: Plat for m Sta r for L i nu x* a nd Open Sou rce Software,” by Ptak, Noel & Associates, a System z solution can be configured to require one-twelfth of the amount of electricit y of a distributed-ser ver farm with equivalent processor capability.
