Q&A Industry insiders deliver answers Breaking Barriers Hybrid technology takes supercomputing beyond Moore’s Law BY JIM UTSLER As it turns out, a lot. IBM is looking toward the future with this type of parallel, hybrid computing, realizing that as customers continue to look for new, faster ways to process and produce data, more dogmatic approaches to computing, such as Moore’s Law, simply aren’t enough to keep up with ongoing computing requirements. Interested in learning more about this, and how the base technology behind Roadrunner will one day impact other IBM systems, IBM Systems Magazine had a conversation with Dave Turek, vice president of Deep Computing. His comments reflect innovative ways of thinking about computing, now and in the future. Q: From what I understand, the Roadrunner system at Los Alamos has put its nearest competitors to shame by having broken the petaflop barrier of 1,000 trillion operations per second. A: Yes, it’s quite a bit faster, but I think the other compelling aspect is from a performance-per-unitof-energy perspective. It’s dramatically better in that aspect than its closest competitors, and this is pretty strategic. Q: Why is that? A: When you get to the point where you’re talking about the fastest computer in the world, you’re also talking about something that’s going to consume energy measured in megawatts. That becomes a significant element of the cost equation when people begin looking at deploying and using these kinds of systems. If you’re running a megawatt of electricity to power and cool your computer, you’re talking about a million dollars a year. That’s a best-case scenario. s of November 2008, the IBM system at the Los Alamos National Laboratory dominated the TOP500 supercomputer list (www.top500. org). Having broken the seemingly unbreakable petaf lop barrier, it stands as a testament to the ingenuity of the people working in IBM’s Deep Computing division. Dubbed Roadrunner, this system is composed of an interesting blend of commodity-based x86 chips and the IBM PowerXCell* 8i chip, which, notably, is based on the Cell Broadband Engine* (Cell/BE*) chip used in the Sony PlayStation 3. That the brains behind Roadrunner devised this strangely compelling combination of technologies to create the world’s fastest computer boggles the mind. After all, what good could come of PC-based chips running alongside a gaming-console chip? A 24 M AY/J U N E 2009 ibmsystemsmag.com/mainframe ILLUSTRATION COURTESY OF IBM
