“VTFM is a relatively inexpensive product that can give the customer a very big bang for their buck.” —Michael Demain “Traditional tape processing used to take a long time—what we called wait time—because we had to mount and dismount tapes, not to mention rewind and wait for serialized access,” says Demain. “Improvements have been made to this over time. One of the things virtual tape did was to write first to a disk buffer, which sped things up, but you still had to wait for the mount and dismount processing. What Diligent has designed is some very clever stuff where you can write to disk but also eliminate the wait time; so you can start seeing improvements up to and including an 80-percent reduction in terms of some of the longrunning batch jobs typically conducted during the overnight hours. There are some very significant returns on investment that can be realized, because VTFM is a relatively inexpensive product that can give the customer a very big bang for their buck.” management system maintains ongoing interaction with the disks as if they’re tape data sets. Through this process, tape data is managed as disk data, with no application changes required. When V TFM is operated in conjunction with a powerful disk-storage subsystem, enterprises can enjoy improved performance, availability and recoverability. “Diligent brought some ver y clever innovations to the mainframe data storage area,” says Demain. “Looking into the future, we’ll be seeing some more interesting technologies coming to the mainframe from Diligent’s open-systems space, potentially including data de-duplication. For now, we’re very impressed with what VTFM delivers, and it’s an important aspect to the acquisition story that needs to be told.” Data Center and Business Benefits VTFM provides data centers with considerably shorter batchprocessing time, which may increase productivity for the data center and the end user. Additionally, VTFM provides innovative disaster-recovery functionality for tape processing and improves overall system performance. Data centers can expect more operational efficiency for less expense. The business end of V TFM can expect swift recover y of mission-critical data and ensured automatic business continuit y and disaster recover y, all areas of growing importance in today’s 24-7 business environment. The boost in system performance VTFM offers may also decrease the complexity of operational management. All of these business benefits can reduce the total cost of ownership. “This really is a big deal for those businesses that rely heavily on data backup and recovery,” says Demain. “We’re talking about a process that is usually performed overnight and can take hours, and cutting that required time down considerably while at the same time becoming more efficient and streamlined. There’s really no reason why a business wouldn’t want to leverage these types of benefits.” How Does VTFM Work? Customers select the specific tape data they want V TFM to process; this is customizable through parameters and is f lexible per the customers’ requirements. When those pr o c e s s r eque st s a r e spe c i f ie d a nd ac t ivate d , V T F M transparently emulates the tape process from start to finish. While VTFM transfers data sets from tape to disk, its tape- Other Enhancements To further optimize a business’s virtual-tape environment and increase virtualized data-set batch processing, VTFM provides additional enhanced features. Virtual Tape Analyzer, for example, can be used to assess how data sets are leveraged over a certain period of time, such as days or weeks, or whatever length of time the customer dictates. By examining this information, VTFM can determine which data sets aren’t regularly accessed and may be better suited to reside on a virtual or physical tape. Another VTFM enhancement is the capability to access shared tape via Parallel Access Tape, meaning unlimited, concurrent single-tape accesses are possible within the VTFM virtual tape system. The Future of VTFM While mainframe market reaction to VTFM is difficult to determine until more time has passed, Demain says the early buzz has been positive. “It’s a bit too early to really tell what the customer reception has been for VTFM, but we have about 70 to 80 customers worldwide to date,” says Demain. “So far, the response has been excellent. It’s really targeted to the small-to-medium size z/OS customer base, but we’ve also gone out and run this by our high-end reseller partners, who have shown a pretty solid interest in it. VTFM has real potential to succeed and grow in the mainframe market.” R yan Rhodes is a for me r editor for I BM Sy s te m s Ma g a zin e. He can b e r ea ch ed a t yossarian9@hotmail.com.
