A

s publishers of IBM Systems Magazine, we
monitor industry trends such as mobile and
business intelligence. When we see growing interest
among our readers in a particular facet of IT, we
often survey our readers via email to find out their
organizations' adoption rates, business drivers and
challenges. Such is the case with big data analytics,
which exploded over the past few years. To get a more
complete picture of big data analytics use among System z* customers, we
partnered with SHARE to survey its membership.
This effort, supported by IBM, yielded a 30-question survey with more
than 1,900 responses. The response rate overall was more than 8 percent.
The findings, detailed in this special report, were enlightening and paint
a good picture of where mainframe customers are in regard to big data
analytics initiatives.
According to the results, some 47 percent of respondents have big data
initiatives in place (see "Big Data's Competitive Advantage," page 4). Another
25 percent are considering big data implementations. Big data initiatives
are largely driven by a need to gain customer and market analysis. Customer
service was another need fueling big data implementations. The results we
found are consistent with what's happening in the market, according to Joe
Clabby, president, Clabby Analytics.
To get a better handle on how the mainframe is helping clients gain
insights from their data, we also interviewed Paul DiMarzio, zEnterprise*
Big Data and Analytics offering manager. His enlightening Q&A begins on
page 12.
Big data analytics is a trend that's not going away. This special report is
designed to show a snapshot of mainframe clients' use of big data. If you
have any comments or feedback, please let me know.
